Haematology Liverpool, our Clinical Haematology service, provide inpatient, outpatient and daycase care to people with blood disorders.
Haematology Liverpool provide a full range of non-cancer Haematology services to the population of Liverpool, and also provide specialist services for a number of conditions for patients across Cheshire and Merseyside and the wider North West.
Clinical services we provide include:
- General/consultative haematology
- Thrombosis services
- Anticoagulation services
- Bleeding disorders services (including Haemophilia Comprehensive Care Centre)
- Immunohaematology services (including Immune Thrombocytopenia and Auto-immune Haemolytic Anaemia)
- Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) and other thrombotic microangiopathies.
- Red cell disorders (including Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Team for patients with Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia)
- Obstetric haematology services (jointly with Liverpool Women’s Hospital)
- Haematology psychology service
- Haematology research team.
We are a friendly, patient-focused, expert-led service, with a wide multiprofessional team of specialist nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, clinical psychologists, physiotherapy and supporting clinical staff.
We do not provide services for patients with blood cancer, these patients are seen by our colleagues at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre who we work closely with.
The service is based at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, but provides care both in hospital and community settings.

Referrals from Primary Care
Referrals from colleagues in primary care must be sent through the Haematology Referral Assessment Service (RAS) available on the NHS E-Referrals System. Referrals will be triaged by a clinical member of the team, and allocated to an appropriate clinic. As a patient, you will then be contacted with an offer of an appointment following this.
In some circumstances, we will contact you to have further investigations (such as blood tests) following the referral. In these circumstances the patient may be discharged with advice or may be booked into a clinic for review.
Referrals from other Specialists
Referrals are received by letter from colleagues within the Trust or other providers (for example other Haematology Teams). These referrals are reviewed by a clinician before allocating to the most appropriate clinic and an offer of an appointment being sent to you.
