Walking and wheeling
The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is less than a mile on foot from Lime Street Station, Central Station and Queens Square bus station, and is accessible via Prescot Street and West Derby Street. Please refer to the Google Maps feeds on this page to explore your possible routes in more detail.

Cycling
The hospital is less than one mile from the city centre. You can get to the hospital via Prescot Street or West Derby Street. You can access a cycle network map by visiting the Merseytravel cycling page.
If you are arriving by bike there are bike parking facilities at the two main entrances on West Derby, Mount Vernon St and the Linda McCartney building. The site is regularly patrolled by Security colleagues and has CCTV coverage.
Parking locations
We encourage our colleagues, patients and visitors to use public transport where possible - this helps ease congestion and saves car parking spaces for those who must use a car.

Bus
There is a variety of bus services which operate from the surrounding areas and drop off at the hospital or within walking distance. Train
The hospital is a mile from Liverpool Lime Street Station which serves the main city line and Liverpool Central Station, which provides routes on the Northern and Wirral lines.
Taxi
There are freephone direct lines to local taxi companies and these can be booked using the freephone’s which are situated in the main entrances.
Taxis are also readily available from Liverpool Lime Street station.
The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is about three miles from the M62, please follow signs for The Royal Liverpool University Hospital and the city centre.
If you are travelling via the Mersey tunnels, Queensway, turn left at the roundabout at the tunnel exit and immediately bear right into the filter lane to turn right at the traffic lights and follow signs.
For the Kingsway tunnel, follow the exit slip road onto the main carriageway keeping in the left-hand lane. At the traffic lights bear left and follow signs.

Car parking
Drivers are directed to the Q-Park multi-storey car park on Prescot Street, L6 1LY.
For those with walking difficulties, there is a shuttle bus service operating between Q-Park, the Liverpool University Dental Hospital and The Royal Liverpool University Hospital. The bus operates Monday to Friday, 6am-8pm. If you find you are waiting a while for the bus, the driver’s number is displayed on the Q-Park exit.

Concessionary parking
Blue Badge holders
Parking for Blue Badge holders is free at the Mount Vernon Street entrance. However, parking is limited, and you are advised to allow sufficient time for parking as you may need to redirect to the nearby Q-Park.
You may be eligible to receive financial help with attending hospital thanks to the NHS Health Travel Cost Scheme.
To get help with travel costs, you need to meet three conditions.
- At the time of your appointment, you or your partner (including civil partners) must receive one of the qualifying benefits or allowances listed on the NHS website or meet the eligibility criteria for the NHS low income scheme.
- You must have a referral from a healthcare professional to a specialist or a hospital for further NHS treatment or tests. This is often referred to as secondary care.
- Your appointment must be on a separate visit to when the referral was made. This applies whether your treatment is provided at a different location (hospital or clinic) or on the same premises as where the GP or another health professional issued the referral.
How to claim back your transport costs
When you arrive for your appointment, please let the reception staff know you want to claim back transport fares. They will complete a travel expense form for you and direct you to the location of General Office who will then process your claim. You will need to provide the following:
- Proof of entitlement to claim reimbursement of travel expenses
- The form authorised by the clinic
- Valid travel ticket (where travel ticket is not provided, mileage will be paid).
Additional information
Only travel expenses for the cheapest form of transport will be reimbursed e.g. bus, train or mileage if by car. Unfortunately, we cannot reimburse taxi fares but can reimburse the equivalent in bus fares.
If you have driven to your appointment, or for medical reasons require an escort, parking can be reimbursed.
At Aintree University Hospital, no cash reimbursement is required as arrangements will be made for the barrier to be lifted.
At Broadgreen Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, you will be reimbursed in cash to exit the car park.
