We care for adult patients (16+ years) with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) - conditions that involve inflammation of gastrointestinal tract (pathway by which food enters the body and solid wastes are expelled).
Inflammatory bowel disease is generally used to describe two conditions: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
The IBD service at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital provides a multi-disciplinary team of experienced health professionals, who work together and with you to ensure you get the care you need.
Our team includes: six gastroenterology consultants, two colorectal surgical consultants, a nurse consultant, four specialist nurses, a senior clinical fellow, three pharmacists, four research nurses, radiology consultants, a histopathology consultant, a dietetic team and a clinical psychologist.
We are supported by a dedicated administration team, the Medical Day Case Unit at Broadgreen Hospital, Endoscopy Unit, homecare teams and our two gastroenterology wards.
Most of the patients we care for are outpatients, but we also provide inpatient care.
We support and provide care to IBD patients through a range of outpatient clinics, which can be in person, via telephone or on a virtual platform.
There are weekly medical IBD clinics and nurse led clinics, alongside specialist clinics for: obstetrics, blood monitoring, cancer surveillance and paediatric transition.
We also provide emergency face-to-face reviews for patients requiring urgent care, and those who wish to have a face-to-face review though our Gastroenterology Ambulatory Unit (GAU). Admission to this unit is through an internal referral basis only.
You will be assessed by an Advanced Nurse Practitioner with support from a consultant where needed.
