Our Gastroenterology Iron Deficiency Anaemia (IDA) Service provides comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and management of iron deficiency anaemia related to gastrointestinal (GI) conditions.

Iron deficiency anaemia is a common condition that may indicate underlying gastrointestinal pathology, including chronic blood loss, malabsorption, or dietary insufficiency. Our multidisciplinary team of gastroenterologists, specialist nurses, and dietitians work collaboratively to identify and treat the cause of IDA.

Patients referred to our service undergo a structured diagnostic pathway, which may include:

  • Detailed clinical assessment to identify symptoms and risk factors
  • Blood tests, including full blood count, ferritin, and iron studies
  • Endoscopic investigations (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) to detect potential sources of blood loss
  • Cross-sectional imaging (CT/MRI) when required for further evaluation
  • Helicobacter pylori testing for potential gastric-related anaemia
  • Dietary and nutritional assessment to support iron repletion.

Following diagnosis, treatment strategies are tailored to individual patient needs and may include:

  • Oral iron supplementation and dietary advice
  • Intravenous iron infusion for patients intolerant to oral iron or with severe deficiency
  • Management of underlying gastrointestinal conditions, such as peptic ulcers, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or GI malignancies
  • Ongoing monitoring and follow-up to prevent recurrence.
