If you don’t do this, you won’t be able to use our e-scooters.

Cycle to Work Salary Sacrifice

LUHFT has signed up to the national cycle scheme to help staff purchase bikes and safety equipment in a bid to encourage more people to get fit and cycle to work.

The hire scheme operates through salary sacrifice which means you can order a bike, pay for it direct from your salary (at source) and enjoy a significant amount of tax savings. It is a hire agreement, at the end of which, staff are offered the option of buying the bike at 5% of the bike's value.

Details of the scheme are as follows:

  • The contract period for the salary sacrifice lasts between 12-18 months.
  • A range of bikes can be bought including road bikes, mountain bikes and fold-up bikes
  • You can purchase safety equipment such lights, luggage carriers, tool kits and clothing etc, either with a bike or on its own
  • the upper limit value of the scheme is £10,000

To take advantage of this scheme, access the website www.cyclescheme.co.uk, typing the code 'c570e' or 'Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust'.

MerseyTravel Salary Sacrifice

As part of an agreement with Merseytravel and Merseyrail, we are able to offer you an annual ticket for the bus and/or train which can be paid monthly rather than upfront in one fee. We will purchase the annual ticket upfront on your behalf and allow you to pay it back monthly, directly deducted from your salary after tax. This will give you 12 months of travel for the price of 10, resulting in a significant saving in comparison to the price of a daily, weekly or monthly ticket.

For Full details of the scheme and how to apply please contact David Halpin on ext 2149 or email general.office@liverpoolft.nhs.uk

Liverpool NHS Community Cycle Club

The Liverpool NHS community cycle club is an inclusive social club that organises community rides for its members. We leave no one behind on our rides which means that if you get a puncture, need a breather, or have any type of issue, we won’t ride off until you’re up and running.

Want to join but don’t have a bike? No worries! We have access to three cycle hubs located in Springfield Park, Broadgreen Hospital, and Greenbank Sports Academy, all of which have 10 bikes that are available to be used for free. We are always keen on new members looking to join as either as a participant and/or as a volunteer.

If joining the Community Cycle Club is something you’d be interested in, you can do so on Spond using the passcode XGHKE. You can also join us on Facebook for ride photos and other local cycling updates.

Smart Green App

The new Smart Green Journey app is designed to promote active travel within the Liverpool City Region.  A route planning and tracking tool that provides a simple calculation of CO2 and money saved when cycling or walking.

Bicycle Buddy scheme

A common barrier to getting into cycling is people not wanting to do it on their own. This is for a variety of reasons, people may be unsure about riding in traffic, or don’t know where they can park their bike, there’s plenty of things that people can be unsure about when riding. For this reason, we are introducing a ‘Bike Buddy’ scheme! This will be a free scheme that will match volunteer cyclists with other members of staff who would like some support cycling to work.

For more information email: Sustainability@liverpoolft.nhs.uk

Bicycle User Group

LUFHT has created a BUG - Bicycle User Group to provide it's members (currently almost 200) with the latest cycling news and events.   This includes events such as Dr Bike sessions (FREE bicycle repair events), NHS bike rides and supporting local cycling groups.  To join the group, email: Sustainability@liverpoolft.nhs.uk

Staff can use the shuttle services as an alternate means of transport between our hospitals (this is currently under review based on the information we are collecting). Case study

In November 2022 LUHFT worked in partnership with Agile Deliveries to develop an emission free E-cargo bike pilot to work alongside our logistic operations. These activities aimed to contribute to strategic plans in areas such as zero carbon, sustainable travel and transport and Health and wellbeing.

20221115_131823.jpgDuring a period of four weeks between November and December, Agile supported the logistics team at Aintree hospital to deliver post to patients within a three mile radius. This opportunity gave time for the Agile team to learn current processes to adapt them into Agiles own operations. It was also felt that weather would be a factor in proving the value of Cargo bikes as a year round operation and not only a fair weather solution.

The four week pilot saved 136kg of Co2. 311 parcels were delivered and 391 miles cycled.
