There is widespread recognition that prevention measures are needed to help address preventable illness and inequalities in health. The NHS Long Term plan prioritises a focus on prevention to help people live healthier lives and stop thousands of people developing life threatening or limiting conditions.

In 2020 the Trust was one of two trusts in the region to pilot an ‘NHS Prevention Pledge’, working with Cheshire and Merseyside Health & Care Partnership. The pledge is a mechanism to support large NHS organisations, working as part of an integrated health and social care system, to support population health goals and sub-regional priorities for prevention.

Following the pilot, the prevention pledge has been rolled out to cover all trusts in Cheshire and Merseyside. This covers 14 pledges, that we are all working towards.

Current areas of focus for the Trust are:

  • Smoking cessation for staff and patients
  • Air quality, with data being monitored at the Royal hospital
  • A Trust staff, patient and visitor Travel Survey, to feed into a new Trust Travel Plan
  • Creation over an overarching Anchor Institution delivery plan.
