The interns complete three placements across the Trust over the course of a college year, with the aim to provide them with the skills, experience and confidence they need to secure paid employment.
Nationally, only 5% of adults with learning disabilities and autism are in full time employment - this figure is lower in the north west, at only 4.1%. However, 60% of graduates from the DFN Project Search programme across the UK are in full time employment. Therefore, this programme significantly improves the interns opportunities to gain employment. It also supports an improved culture within the Trust, making our organisation more reflective of the communities we serve.
Below Ethan, one of our interns from our 2022/23 cohort, talks about his placement in the clinical coding team.
Over the years we've had placements in a variety of departments, including Catering, Waste, Sterile Services, Health & Safety, various inpatient wards, and many more. However, we're always looking for more departments to get involved so we can provide the best possible internship for the individuals taking part.
