Inpatient Falls 2024 Report on 2023 Clinical Data (NAIF)

The National Falls & Fragility Fracture Audit Programme (FFFAP) has published Don’t Stop Moving (Optimising safety while staying active in hospital), the 2024 National Audit of Inpatient Falls (NAIF) report on 2023 clinical data. Based on 1,609 cases, it states that falls prevention activity should not focus solely on older people’s wards, finding that nearly half of all inpatient femoral fractures (IFFs) occur on general medical wards (almost twice the proportion of IFFs that happen in older people’s wards).

Emergency Laparotomy Ninth Patient Report (NELA)

The National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA) has published its Ninth Patient Report, covering December 2021 to March 2023.

It finds that there has been a deterioration in performance since last year in several key areas. In many others there has been insufficient improvement over repeated audit cycles and annual reports. Examples of a decline in performance include preoperative engagement with consultant anaesthetists and intensivists, and the proportion of patients who arrive in theatre within stated timescales from the time of decision to operate. Importantly, this report also shows a corresponding lack of further improvement of some key outcome measures including mortality and postoperative length of stay.

Publication of National Joint Registry (NJR) Annual Report

The NJR’s 21st Annual Report for the period of 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024 contains full analysis of the shoulder, elbow and ankle joints available.

The Registry’s purpose is to record patient information and provide data on the performance and longevity of replacement joint implants, the surgical outcomes for the hospitals where these operations are carried out, and on the performance outcomes of the surgeons who conduct the procedures.

The NJR has shown that orthopaedic surgery, as one of the main users of implant devices in the UK, is demonstrating the highest standards of patient safety in their use. A key message from the report is that safety and clinical outcomes continue to improve, as identified through the reduction of joint revision surgery.
