Informed Consent

Consent to treatment is the principle that a person must give permission before they receive any type of medical treatment, test or examination.

For consent to be valid, it must be voluntary and informed, and the person consenting must have capacity.

'Voluntary' - the decision to consent or not consent to medical treatment is made freely by the person without persuasion or pressure from professionals, family, friends or others.

'Informed' - the person must be given all information about the treatment, including benefits and risks, and whether there are reasonable alternatives and the adverse outcome of not going ahead with treatment.

'Capacity' - the person must be able to understand the information provided to them and make an informed decision.
