Awarded Team of the Month for January, the Security Department have dealt with a high volume of serious incidents over the past few months, some of which they have been first responders. Despite this, the team continue to supervise everything from a security perspective with immense professionalism and with the best interest of all involved their main priority.
They ensure all colleagues, patients and visitors are safe at all times whist working collaboratively with external agencies such as Merseyside Police and fire departments.
“They are an incredible team and such a support to patients and staff 24/7, often the unsung heroes in facing difficult, traumatic and testing experiences on a regular basis to keep all colleagues, patients and visitors safe at all times. The department is a credit to the Trust.”
Team of the Month for February, the LCL Laboratory Transfusion Team who operate across our Aintree, Broadgreen and Royal sites have received exceptional feedback from external assessors on the standards of documentation, process and competency. All transfusion laboratory staff, operational managers, deputy managers, biomedical scientists, associated practitioners, and medical laboratory assistants are recognised in this effort.
The lead assessor stated that the Trust should be proud of the level of achievement that the laboratories have displayed. This translates into the quality, care and safety that the laboratory affords to patients within the Trust. The management within LCL are extremely proud of this great work.
“Well done to the LCL transfusion team, high praise from an external regulator is an excellent accolade to have. Keep up the good work. It is important to highlight this work and the contribution to patient care and experience - excellent work from staff working behind the scenes.”
The team was awarded Team of the Month as they have worked under immense pressure to provide a safe clean environment.
The nomination said: "The team have worked extremely hard under pressure in relation to patient flow to ensure wards are deep clean. They must do their work at such a fast pace for the patients to be able to go to their bed spaces, this also includes the fast flow of clinical cleans. They also must complete this while doing deep cleans to ensure infection prevention and ensure a very clean safe environment for our patients and staff. They are unsung heroes."
Awarded Team of the Month for April, the Emergency Theatre team demonstrate exceptional skill, teamwork and professionalism, particularly demonstrated during a challenging night shift in April whereby the team conducted emergency lifesaving surgery in the early hours of the morning. The team worked tirelessly for several hours to stabilise a patient, complete the complex surgery despite
Jamie, Keith, Andre, Jennie & V were all mentioned within the nomination, deserving huge credit for the way they handled the entire situation. The team were focused on providing optimal care for this patient and endeavoured to achieve the best possible outcome for the patient and their family.
“It makes me feel immensely proud to work with such highly skilled professionals who consistently strive for the best possible patient outcomes, and I want the team to know that the care and commitment that they give to the patients that they care for every single day for doesn't go unnoticed.”

This nomination was submitted by a patient, who was cared for at the Trauma and Orthopaedics Unit at Broadgreen hospital. The nomination explains how from the outset they were shown courtesy, respect and above all else, empathy from the nursing staff and throughout their time in the unit, were made to feel relaxed and in safe hands.
“With a great knowledge of what I was experiencing, a cause was quickly identified and based on cause to effect results, a clear strategy of the next steps. I left Broadgreen Trauma and Orthopaedics Unit feeling positive, reassured, and confident I had received the highest level of medical attention.
The judges thanked the team for their dedication to their patients and each other, describing them as inspirational. “A true example of living the values of LUHFT and enhancing our patient experience.”
Congratulations to our latest Team of the Month, our security team, who for the second time this year have managed to negotiate a patient from a potential life-threatening situation on our Aintree site.
The nomination shows how quick thinking along with the compassionate care shown by the security team meant they managed to support the patient to safety, de-escalating the situation from potentially life-threatening incident.
The judges praised the security team for their hard work and dedication in dealing with an increasing number of serious and challenging incidents across our sites. This nomination highlights the huge importance of their role, illustrating not only what they do but their professionalism and care.
Ward 5B were awarded Team of the Month for July for the exceptional care, compassion and dedication shown to a terminally ill patient and his family during this difficult time.
Submitted by the patient’s daughter, the nomination explained how Ward 5B provided the most amazing care, not only looking after her dad, but all of the family:
“When my dad was admitted he was extremely ill and it wasn't expected that he would make it, but the treatment and the love and support he received made such a huge difference. My dad was in hospital for four weeks, the ward kept us informed throughout his hospital stay, explaining everything thoroughly, got us through all of the lows and picked us up. The team did everything they could to ensure his last wishes were granted to be at home, even though it wasn't easy. They encouraged him and praised him for everything when they knew he was struggling.
"We will always be so grateful to everyone on Ward 5B. We can't thank them enough for making my dad's hospital experience such a positive one. All of the visitors who saw the staff interactions with my dad and the family couldn't have been more impressed, everyone could see how much compassion the staff had and all the care he received which kept him going. Thank you so much Ward 5B, you will always have a special place in our hearts!"
The judges defined this nomination as powerful and poignant, highlighting the efforts of the multidisciplinary team: “A huge well done and thank you to you all - this is what our Trust value is all about, such a lovely nomination to read. Well done Ward 5B!”
Nominated by a patient, Interventional Radiology, were awarded Team of the Month for demonstrating that delivering care goes well beyond simply administering scans.
They received an abundance of praise for their ability to build a meaningful rapport with the patient, putting them at ease in what was a stressful environment: “I’ve been having fortnightly drains with the team for over a year now and when I get wheeled into their departments it makes me feel happy, even though I am going to have a painful procedure.
“The team always ask about my husband and dogs, simple conversations which don’t half pick you up. With the most recent treatment having a positive effect, I haven’t seen the team for several weeks now – this is great news, but at the same time I miss seeing them.
“Putting them forward for this award was the least I could do to show my appreciation for their empathy and the outstanding care they deliver.”
The judges praised the team and said: “Teams like this are unaware of the positive difference they have on people’s lives. They set an amazing example and should be extremely proud of this award.”
Ward 5B were awarded for demonstrating high standards of professionalism whilst making a patient and his family feel safe, secure and well cared for.
Submitted by a patient’s wife following a long hospital stay, the nomination praised Ward 5B for their upmost care and integrity from the moment they arrived. The nomination explained how all the team on Ward 5B were informative, showing great attention to the patient and his family: “The way the ward is run by the great ward managers, setting out care plans that are put into action promptly is brilliant - this is how other hospitals should run their departments with no fuss and total integrity.
“They made us feel totally safe and secure in their care and carried out their duties so efficiently and compassionately. I just can’t praise all the staff on this ward enough.
“Having been a long stay patient at another hospital and then receiving this level of care, we’ve been so lucky to have been an inpatient at the Royal Liverpool Hospital, thank you all so very much.”
The judges defined this nomination as a lovely example of delivering high standards of professionalism while achieving significant results, with compassion and excellence. Well done to all on Ward 5B!
Ward 11 was awarded for providing “the most wonderful, dedicated, professional and high-quality care and compassion” to a palliative patient.
Nominated by the patient’s granddaughter, the nomination read:
“Not only did the staff love and care for Grandma but they looked after our family too, who were trying to come to terms with the diagnosis and severity of her health. Grandma went into hospital at the amazing age of 91 and had never been in hospital before.
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, and I believe they are an absolute asset to Aintree hospital and the NHS. Every single team member we met on this ward went above and beyond for us as a family and we will always be grateful to all of you and cannot thank you enough for the compassionate end of life care.
The judges praised Ward 11, with comments such as:
“This is really lovely to read and a testament to the warmth and empathy of the staff providing support to both the patient and their family. A huge well done to you all.”

The Specimen Reception Blood Science Laboratory Team were awarded for demonstrating collaborative teamwork and effective partnership working with other organisations.
The team at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories work together to efficiently analyse patient samples, ensuring they are tested in an appropriate time frame and results made available for both hospital and community patients to ensure effective treatment pathways can be started.
Recently the team, who are based across our Aintree and Royal sites, have also showcased excellent work with partner organisations – with their collaborative efforts making a real difference in supporting timely care for our communities.
