The Trust must allow restricted access to blood component storage devices and contain a full audit trail of the blood components movement and administration, in accordance with UK Legislation, EU directives and Blood Safety Regulations.

The current system only partly addresses these legal obligations, so we are introducing a new system to deliver a full ‘closed loop’ solution which will enable us to track movement of blood from fridge to patient.

There are three key components to this implementation:

  • Kiosk - Blood storage container lockdown by using access-controlled touch screen kiosks controlling electromagnetic locks on the blood fridges
  • Bedside – Administration of blood components to the patient using mobile device software, and PPID (Positive Patient Identification). Handheld devices will be rolled out to all areas where blood transfusions take place at the bedside
  • Web application – Providing a 360-degree view of all past, present, and current blood component usage and control.

The Blood 360 kiosks in the Royal Liverpool, Broadgreen, Liverpool Heart and Chest, Clatterbridge and the Liverpool Women's sites were updated and went live on 12 - 13 November 2024.

WEB APPLICATION – Once the kiosks were validated and were Live, a new URL was made available.

Next steps

Bedside – The mobile devices will start to be rolled out to allow users to support positive patient/client identification (PPID) to administer blood components from the bedside. This will commence on: Wednesday 29 January 2025. The running order for this rollout will follow and your Wards and Departments will be contacted with instructions.

There will be people on hand to support you during this rollout and each area has its own Clinical Champion and Transfusion Lead who will also be able to help and offer advice.
