The Critical Incident that was declared on 7 January 2025 has been formally stood down today (13 January 2025).
A spokesperson for University Hospitals of Liverpool Group said: “We would like to thank members of the public who have supported us by choosing other services, such as a GP, local pharmacy or walk-in centre, as it means we have been able to focus our efforts on our sickest patients. Colleagues at Aintree and Royal Liverpool hospitals have been working hard to see and treat people as quickly as possible and, where appropriate, get them home to their loved ones.
“We know that there are high levels of flu, respiratory illness and winter bugs in the community, which has impacted our Emergency Departments. If you are attending our EDs, patients and visitors should follow some additional infection control measures to help curb the spread of winter viruses such as flu and norovirus. This includes practicing good hand hygiene, only visiting the areas they need to in our hospitals and wearing masks in clinical areas if asked to do so.”
Our hospitals have seen an increasing number of people with flu and respiratory illnesses in recent weeks.

Finding the best service for your needs
People should only come to the Emergency Department in the event of a medical emergency. If you have a less urgent concern, we would always ask you to consider alternative services, including your GP, local pharmacy or walk in centre.
If you are not sure which service is most appropriate for your needs, visit the NHS 111 website which has advice and a tool to help identify your nearest service.
