Aintree University Hospital’s Liver Service has become one of a select few to receive a national accreditation in recognition of the high levels of care it is providing to patients.
The service has been awarded an Improving Quality in Liver Services (IQILS) accreditation, which is endorsed by the Royal College of Physicians, British Liver Trust and British Society of Gastroenterologists.
IQILS assessors praised colleagues for their passion and effectiveness in both hospital and community settings.
The service’s Alcohol Care Team received plaudits for helping deliver comprehensive aftercare for patients with alcohol dependency. Having established a strong relationship with community nurses, the team is communicating requirements on a case-by-case basis to ensure new, healthier habits are maintained.
Assessors also highlighted the team’s work with Liverpool John Moores University and Knowsley Council to develop the Kirby Kitchen Cookbook, a free resource aiming to help reduce the risk of liver disease, which currently impact one in three adults locally.
Nick Stern, Consultant Hepatologist at Aintree University Hospital, said: “This achievement is testament to a team that leaves no stone unturned when it comes to delivering the best care and outcomes for its patients.
“Our job doesn’t just start when our patients are admitted or end when they are discharged, we have duty to educate our communities on liver related problems and prevent them before hospital care is the only solution.
“I’m incredibly proud that the team has received this level of national recognition.”
