LUHFT recently welcomed the Chief Scientific Adviser for the Department of Health and Social Care, Professor Lucy Chappell, to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital to discuss ambitious plans to improve healthcare across the region.
Prof Chappell met with our Chief Executive, James Sumner, as well as Prof Louise Kenny, Executive Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and Prof Tim Jones, Vice Chancellor of the University of Liverpool (pictured above), to talk about the recent memorandum of understanding between the Trust and the University of Liverpool to advance plans for an Academic Health Sciences Campus on the site of the former Royal Hospital.
James said: “It was great to be able to meet with Professor Chappell to provide her with further insight into the significant improvements that the new clinical skills and health education facility could bring to the next generation of health care workers.
“The campus offers opportunities for collaboration and partnership in clinical research and innovation for the benefit of the NHS across the region, which is essential for improving the care and treatment we deliver whilst also helping to tackle challenges, such as the health inequalities within the Liverpool City Region.”
Prof Kenny said “An AHSC will bring huge advantage to our city. We know that patients who are cared for in an environment where medical research is embedded within routine clinical care have, on average, outcomes which are approximately 30% better.
"In addition, health care professionals trained within an AHSC have access to the cutting-edge facilities and innovation which translated into direct benefit to patient care. For these reasons and many others, the University of Liverpool is completely committed to bringing an AHSC to our city and we were delighted to be able to share these exciting plans with Professor Chappell.”
Prof Chappell said: “It was a pleasure to visit the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and hear about the exciting proposals for the new AHSC, which will play a crucial role in improving care and reducing health inequalities across Liverpool.”
