Heart of LUHFT Awards: 2024 winners
This year's Heart of LUHFT Awards was a fantastic celebration of the outstanding achievements of our colleagues across all our hospitals.
The awards ceremony held at the Titanic Hotel, Liverpool on Friday 8 November was attended by over 500 colleagues following an astounding number of nominations.
Hosted by local and popular Hits Radio Liverpool presenter, Leanne Campbell, the event celebrated the outstanding achievements of our colleagues and the incredible impact that they all have on our communities.

Brian McKenna, Portering Shift Manager
Brian consistently demonstrates an extraordinary level of care and compassion in his interactions with patients and colleagues. His selfless dedication has been described as instrumental in maintaining high standards within the portering department and fostering an inclusive work environment. He supported the introduction and training of new devices, playing a key role in driving positive change throughout the team.
Annette Pollitt and Lucy Raven, Project Search
Annette and Lucy identified a process to support inclusive recruitment, especially for young people with learning disabilities. The Golden Ticket recruitment process breaks down employment barriers and ensures people are given equitable access to employment. Through this, we’ve supported 42 interns who have a learning disability – it’s hoped more interns will now join LUHFT.
Amina Farah, Latent Tuberculosis Programme Lead
Amina has transformed a pilot initiative targeting Latent Tuberculosis (TB) into a permanent program. This initiative now enables timely and efficient screening and treatment for Latent TB among new entrants to the country. Under Amina’s leadership, the programme has facilitated the screening and diagnosis of a record number of patients across Liverpool.
Emma Thornton, Ward Manager, Ward 11
In just six months as Interim Ward Manager, Emma has influenced huge improvements in the quality and safety of care on Ward 11. Emma, described as “an embodiment of our Trust values”, leads by example and instils accountability and confidence in her team, supporting colleagues to explore further training and education whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Gastroenterology Consultants, Gastroenterology/Nutrition
Nominated by a patient that has been under their care for the past seven years, the Gastroenterology team has been praised for its support after giving the patient the “strength and determination to fight whatever comes their way”, following their diagnosis of Addison’s Disease and recovery after falling into a coma. The patient describes the team as a “credit to the Trust”.
Trauma Orthopaedic Therapies Team
The Trauma Orthopaedic Therapy team has worked together to overcome a number of challenges this year, promoting a kindness culture and ensuring the wellbeing of all colleagues. The team works closely with other teams and departments and is dedicated to meeting Best Practice Tariffs, often achieving 100% each month.
Reablement Hub, Ward 2 and Ward 7
The Reablement team has worked together tirelessly to reduce the impact deconditioning has on patients’ length of stay in hospital. Described as innovative and inspirational, it has identified barriers and streamlined processes to enable some of the most vulnerable patients away from the emergency portals. This has resulted in 100% of patients on the reablement wards being discharged back to their usual place of residence.
Dementia and Delirium Team
The team works tirelessly to deliver exceptional healthcare through tailored activities and support, enhancing patient safety and experience. They recently updated their referral system which now allows patients to be seen quicker with more proficiency, enabling colleagues to prioritise patient needs and receive support from the service earlier.
Point of Care Testing (POCT) Team
This team enables ward areas and clinics, within both LUHFT and external trusts, to provide quality assured tests to aid patient pathways and diagnosis. In the past year, it has worked together to deliver a range of collaborative projects with other local NHS Trusts, training all users of the Point of Care Service and ensuring technical issues with any devices are dealt with swiftly to ensure continuity of service and patient care.
Ward 8D, Infectious Diseases Team
Last year, the ward changed speciality from clinical pharmacology to infectious diseases and the team’s attitude to upskilling and enhancing their knowledge has been outstanding. It cares for patients with extremely complex needs and are eager to continuously improve the care they provide patients, as well as working tirelessly to support each other.
Rose McShane Griffiths
Rose has been a dedicated and instrumental volunteer for Liverpool University Hospitals Charity for the last 20 years. She has supported countless charity events, raising important funds to improve our services. Never shying away from responsibility, the Fundraising team would be lost without her.
Joey Mee
Joey is described as someone who “always shows care, compassion and empathy” in his role as a security supervisor. He has been nominated for his response in supporting a serious incident on site, and how he also continually goes out of his way to ensure the wellbeing of others and helping staff.
The winner of the LUHFT Team of the Year Award has been chosen from the winners of each of the site-based Team of the Year awards: Aintree, Broadgreen, Corporate, LCL and the Royal.
