As we near International Women’s Day 2025, we are showcasing another one of our fantastic women demonstrating their impact on healthcare.

Kasia Pekala, Project Manager for our Major Capital Projects team at University Hospitals of Liverpool Group plays a key role in driving forward estates improvements across our hospitals.

Kasia, is one of the few women working in our NHS Estates department and leads large teams to deliver major capital projects, helping to shape the future of healthcare infrastructure.

Born in Poland, Kasia discovered her passion for buildings and architecture at an early age.

Kasia said: “Growing up I was always fascinated by buildings and construction, especially whilst watching my father building homes.”

This passion led her to pursue a Building Surveying degree at Liverpool John Moore’s University, graduating in 2021 to begin her professional journey. Alongside her studies towards her degree Kasia held a receptionist role at Liverpool Women's Hospital.

Soon after graduation, she began her career in estates as a Maintenance Assistant at the same hospital.

She added: "I was the first female Maintenance Assistant in the organisation and felt proud to be excelling in what is generally considered to be a male dominated environment.

“Colleagues were very supportive towards me and empowered me to develop my skills and overcome barriers to step into roles previously carried out by male colleagues, this meant I had my own toolbox and drill.

“I noticed that they championed women in the industry and were keen to encourage more women to consider a career in Estates and Facilities, and I am too!"

In July 2022, Kasia joined the Property Management Team as Assistant Estates Officer, at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

She said: "In this role, I was part of a team who managed building surveys and property moves around the sites. Coordinating the transfer of services, from the old Royal Liverpool University Hospital to the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

“This was without doubt one of my most challenging tasks to date, it was also my proudest as I was surrounded by colleagues, often women, who empowered teams and departments to ensure a safe transition of clinical departments into the new build.”

As a result of her hard work, and commitment to her career, Kasia was promoted to Project Manager, for Major Capital Projects in September 2023.

Kasia added: This International Women’s Day, I wanted to share my story to inspire and empower other females aspiring to start their career in Estates and Facilities to follow their dreams. I am proud to be part of the major hospital schemes improvements that are contributing towards improving healthcare infrastructure for patients, staff and visitors.”
